We Made A Beer!
It's about damn time! Far too often after an epic day of skiing, après conversations lead to talking about making our own beer. Lucky for us, the amazing brewers at Lawson's Finest Liquids at just down the road.
After bugging them with a few emails, we met up at their brewery and sat down with their team to brainstorm on the idea. Being all shredders, we were immediately on the same page and eager to make it happen! Within weeks we were scheming up names and graphics for our new beer.
We narrowed it down to a few different names and made some rough mockups for graphic inspirations. Then we asked a ton of skiers including you on Instagram which you liked best, and "Mogul Masher" was the clear winner!
BREWING MOGUL MASHER PALE ALE
When it was time to brew, we met up at the house where Sean Lawson started Lawson's Finest brewing out of his small barn. It gave me flash backs to starting my first ski company "Line" out of my parent's garage. It's so freakin cool they still keep it running, brewing small batches and prototypes here!🤯
The process is more like being in a high tech science lab than a barn. Every ingredient is carefully measured and recorded so we can recreate the recipe. The temperatures of the brew tanks and the timing of everything is all written down and carefully calculated. We can use these notes to tweak the formula later too. Below is Taylor and I pretending we know wtf we're doing. ha
Don't worry, brewer Brian restricted us to just lifting heavy ingredients. 💪 He knew better than to trust someone that barely passed science class! He kept his eye on me, how can I screw up stirring? He assured us this first batch of Mogul Masher would be perfect.
Pour, stir, mix, mash, check temperature, check consistency, repeat! Brian was constantly checking and referring to the recipe notes to make sure we stayed on track!
That's liquid gold being pumped from the main brew tank to the hot side of the system. Then we cleared out the left over MASH. "Mashing" is the term given to the start of the brewing process, where crushed grains are mixed with water to form a porridge-like mixture called the “mash”. OK enough science! Then we shoveled it out of the tank and it goes to a local farm to feed the animals. Lucky cows!
We brewed the beer to be on the lighter side, yet still full of flavor. Something to quench your thirst after a full day of skiing. A crisp pale ale with tropical hops that is true to Lawson's Finest signature style.
Two weeks later and a lot of patience later... Taylor went to watch our very first batch of Mogul Masher get canned at Lawson's facility!
